Introduction of the EU Emissions Trading Scheme

The European Emissions Trading System (EU ETS) has been the EU's central climate protection instrument since 2005. Its aim is to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from the participating energy sector and energy-intensive industry. Intra-European air traffic has also been participating since 2012. In addition to carbon dioxide, nitrous oxide and perfluorocarbons have also been included since 2013.
